What unites Argentina to the south with Mexico to the north? How much do Brazilians and Guatemalans have in common? The expression “Latin America” was first used in the middle of the nineteenth century. The poet and Bolivarist José María Torres Caicedo wrote the poem “The Two Americas” (“Las dos Américas”) in 1862, which has remained as the first lyrical description of a Latin American continent. What do authors think of this today? Is there any common “Latinamericanness” across the borders?
