Etter terrorangrepene i Paris har stadig flere land sluttet opp om bombingen av IS i Syria. Terrornettverket IS hadde gått helt under radaren, til det plutselig erobret Iraks tredje største by Mosul sommeren 2014 og kort tid etterpå erklærte å ha opprettet et nytt kalifat. Halvannet år etter er det få ting som kan konkurrere med IS når det kommer til mediedekning og plassen de legger beslag på i politiske ordskifter og i den offentlige samtalen.
Den syriske forfatteren og forskeren Hassan Hassan er blant dem som hadde fulgt utviklingen i Syria og framveksten av IS tettest, og han startet lenge før Mosul-erobringen. Hassan er fast spaltist i avisa The National og en hyppig brukt kommentator på Al-Jazeera og mange andre medier. I boka ISIS. Inside the Army of Terror (2015), som ble til i samarbeid med Michael Weiss, beskriver Hassan blant annet hvordan Syria-diktator Assad og Iran bidro til å bygge opp IS.

After the Paris terrorist attacks, a growing number of countries now support the bombing of the Islamic State in Syria. The terrorist organization was completely under the radar, until it suddenly captured Iraq’s third largest city, Mosul, in the summer of 2014, and shortly after declared the establishment of a new caliphate. A year and a half later, not much can compete with the Islamic State when it comes to media coverage and the space it takes up in political debates and public conversation.
Syrian writer and researcher Hassan Hassan is among those who has studied the developments in Syria and the growth of the Islamic State most closely, starting long before the capture of Mosul. Hassan is a regular columnist in The National and a frequently used commentator by Al-Jazeera and many other media. In his book ISIS. Inside the Army of Terror (2015), which he wrote together with Michael Weiss, Hassan describes how Syrian dictator Assad and Iran contributed to the making of the Islamic State.
What measures can bring Syria towards peace and democracy? At the House of Literature, Hassan Hassan will talk about the way out of the mess, what he thinks about the contributions of the West, and how the IS can be defeated.
