In her satirical text «How to write about Somalia», Safia Aidid writes: «Always use the words ‘terror’, ‘clan’, ‘pirates’ and ‘refugee’.» Aidid is writing her PhD on modern Somali history at Harvard University. The region subject for her research has been through great and tumultuous periods, including colonization, civil war, self-declared states and conflicts with neighboring Ethiopia. Who has the right to tell Somalia’s story? In this lecture, Safia Aidid will go beyond the stereotypes and through the key parts of the Horn of Africa’s recent history.
