As the world grapples with the escalating climate crisis, emerging research highlights a pivotal yet often overlooked factor in achieving true climate justice — the impact of 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 on 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of our rainforests.
We will feature a keynote talk by 𝐍𝐞𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬, a former undercover police officer from the U.K., who has become a prominent writer and international activist for drug law reform. The event will also feature an 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥 in the fields of environmental science, drug policy reform, and social justice.
Together we will explore how the shadow economy generated by drug prohibition fuels extractivist activities that lead to deforestation and forest degradation. Organized criminals earn enormous sums, and the corruption that follows hinders effective climate action. Indigenous rights are violated, and their lives are put at risk. Climate activists and journalists are also killed when they cover criminal activities in the rainforest.
