Capturing Public Attention

Who shapes our collective attention? A talk on power, public debate, and who gets to set the agenda.

Detail from a mural by Diego Rivera depicting people gathered in a crowded industrial setting, their attention is captured and directed towards different figures, objects and events.

Public attention is limited, but who decides what deserves our attention? Why do some issues dominate the headlines while others struggle to be heard? And what happens to democracy when the power to shape public debate is concentrated in the hands of a few?

What we collectively pay attention to shapes which problems are addressed, whose voices are heard, and how political power is held accountable. Yet our shared agenda is increasingly influenced by powerful media actors, digital platforms, and competing interests. In this conversation, political philosophers Katharine Browne, Zsolt Kapelner, and Mathea Slåttholm Sagdahl explore who gets to shape our collective attention, why this matters for democracy, and what a more inclusive and democratic public agenda might look like.
